Politics and Why I Don’t Want To Play

I received the email below and because of it, I am stepping away from the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I am not doing this lightly and I am not doing it out “political spite”. There are two very troubling messages in this email that have driven me to this decision.

First, “the reality is that we are in serious danger of losing a once-in-a-generation chance to achieve real health care reform” is not a true statement, unless you define “real health care reform” as “single-payer health care”. There are many ways to reform health care without moving to single-payer. Just because I don’t think the Government is capable of fixing the problems in health care does not mean that I am making the issue political.

Second,

Just the other day I heard a story about a man named Ruben, who has been fighting cancer off and on for 11 years. This year, he lost his job. His cancer, which had been stable, became active again and he has had to go back on treatment. His doctor prescribed two new chemotherapy drugs to combat the cancer. But last week, Ruben had to tell his pharmacist, “No, don’t fill that prescription. I can’t afford it.”

was a troubling story for me. However, my expectation would be that the end of the story would be “thanks to the generous contributions of individuals and corporations, LAF was able to help Ruben.” This is why I give to charities, because the charities are far more effective at helping people than the Government could ever be.

I am sure that many people will write me off as a right wing nut and while it is true my political views are on the opposite side of the aisle from where the “Health Care Reform Bill” is being pushed. It is not true that my motivation for being opposed is to simply defeat the President and his party. I believe if the health care reform bill is passed, it will result in a much shorter life expectancy for Cancer patients. When government bureaucrats are applying cost/benefit analysis to treatments, how may Cancer patients will be asked to “just take the pain pills.”? Not to mention the overly burdensome taxes that will end up leaving me with less money available to donate to worthy charities.

Dear Steve,

Last night, President Obama stood before the nation and delivered his State of the Union address. We were delighted to see him deliver a clear message to Congress saying, “I will not walk away from these Americans and neither should the people in this chamber…Let’s get it done.”

Despite those strong words, the reality is that we are in serious danger of losing a once-in-a-generation chance to achieve real health care reform. The situation couldn’t be more urgent, and we need your help to send a strong message to Congress: Do not give up on health care reform. Will you join us and send your elected officials a clear message to keep up the fight?

http://www.livestrong.org/takeaction2010

You could not write fiction more dramatic than what we have seen over the last week. On January 18, one state elected a Senator and we are being told that may reset the entire healthcare reform effort. We must be clear in saying to our elected officials: You must not give up. We are counting on you.

Unfortunately, Ruben is not alone. We all hear these stories far too often or have our own version to share. That is why it is more important than ever that we send a strong message to Washington: Forget politics and remember Ruben.

http://www.livestrong.org/takeaction2010

It only takes a moment to share this message with your elected officials, to tell them, as the President said last night: “Don’t walk away. Not now. Finish the job for the American people.”

As someone who has been touched by cancer, you know firsthand how critical it is to have dependable, quality health care. It can be the difference between life and death. Let’s not let this once-in-a-generation opportunity pass us by.

Borger: GOP faces choice between purity and new ideas – CNN.com

This is a really funny article. Borger: GOP faces choice between purity and new ideas – CNN.com. The advice to Republicans in this column is to be more like Democrats. Which is really funny when you contrast this statement against the last 8 years.

Because when you spend all of your time in the opposition, railing against the other party, people will never quite know what you stand for. The temptation to do it is immense, of course — particularly since the Republicans seem fresh out of new ideas.

The advice is to present new Ideas instead of railing against the other party? When did the Democrats follow that advise? Give me a break. If Republicans want to ever win again, they need to be the Ronald Reagan conservatives that they once were.

In fact, some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy.

Kim Andrew Elliott discussing International Broadcasting and Public Diplomacy

A previous post of my drew some attention: Kim Andrew Elliott discussing International Broadcasting and Public Diplomacy.

Blogger complains that one of his posts brought a response publicizing VOA election coverage. He says that it was not only spam, but spam "offshored" to India. Steve Miller's Blog, 25 September 2008.

Let’s be clear, a comment was attached to a blog post that I had linked to a story about how Gov. Sarah Palin’s personal email account on Yahoo.com was hacked. Other than the Governor being involved, the post had nothing to do with politics. This comment contained nothing about the article I linked to and promoted something I did not link to (VOA). That makes the comment very clearly spam. I also took the extra effort and traced back the IP Address of the machine making the comment, which lead to an Internet Service Provider in India. I have yet to see disputes of my major points. 1. I was spammed by Voice of America, 2. The spamming was performed from India, and 3. My own tax dollars were used to spam me.

The Bailout: Slouching towards Socialism

It appears that even the US Congress will pass legislation that will all the US Government to take our tax dollars and give them to large corporations to prevent the large corporations from paying the price for making poor business decisions. Now that I see all of the politicians falling in line, I am really afraid. When they all agree on something, it can mean no good for us. This means that everyone is running for cover and afraid to take a stand. This is a power and money grab that is beyond comprehension and I have yet to see the enumerated power that allows the federal government to do this. I received an email from the National Taxpayers Union that has grave concerns about this bailout:

This unconscionable scheme forces the vast majority of taxpayers who were honest and prudent to bail out firms on Wall Street that made bad business decisions. Furthermore, it does nothing to address the root causes of today’s market difficulties. The long-term effects of this fiasco, including inflation, a weaker dollar, and an even more precarious federal balance sheet, are almost certain to outweigh the shallow short-term stabilization of moneyed interests who have been twisting arms on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue.

I think you will find a lot of politicians on both sides of the aisle that are receiving large campaign contributions from many of the companies involved in this. The Democrats are trying to say this is the result of deregulation, but the truth is that this is the result of over-regulation.

Congress helped to create this debacle with the Community Reinvestment Act, poor tax policies, hastily designed mark-to-market regulations, and spectacular negligence with regard to the systemic risks posed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Rather than addressing those core problems, this disgraceful plan instead snatches $700 billion from the pockets of hard-working Americans, the vast majority of whom had no part in this horrific play.

There are even people involved in this who say the taxpayer’s will “make money” on this deal. Ha! The government might turn a profit on the deal, but anyone who thinks that the taxpayer’s will see any of that profit has no recollection of history.

I intend to call my members of congress today to let them know that I think this is a bad idea, fully expecting to be politely told I am an idiot.

UPDATE:
Further evidence this legislation should not pass.

The legislation also requires that the government take ownership stakes in companies that receive federal infusions, so it could share a piece of potential future profits.

The government should have no stake in private sector businesses.

Voice of America offshores spamming duties to India

I can’t believe I was spammed with my own tax dollars. I recently found this comment on another blog I run that just holds links of pages I post to my del.icio.us account. It is totally a passive blog for me and really is sees little if no traffic.

In this election year of unprecedented international interest, VOA has introduced this new online meeting place for visitors to both learn more about the candidates and electoral process, and to share their own experiences, comments, and questions. Browse the site, join our global community, meet others with similar interests and varying views, and become a part of this fascinating and historic election. VOANews.com provides a comprehensive mix of text, audio, and video content in 45 languages, an accomplishment not equaled by any other international news organization.

So not only am I getting spammed by “The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is a multimedia international broadcasting service funded by the U.S. Government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts more than 1,250 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of 134 million people.” They have offshored their spam work to India. At least if my tax dollars were being spent to spam me, they could pay Americans to do it.

FOXNews.com – Report: Obama Turns Down Support From Lindsay Lohan – Celebrity Gossip | Entertainment News | Arts And Entertainment

Wow! The first smart thing the Obama campaign has done in quite a while. FOXNews.com – Report: Obama Turns Down Support From Lindsay Lohan – Celebrity Gossip | Entertainment News | Arts And Entertainment

The funny quote from the story:

"Women have come a long way in the fight to have the choice over what we do with our bodies … and it's frightening to see that a woman in 2008 would negate all of that," she wrote.

What she gets wrong is that the Pro-live movement believes that women do have the right to choose what they do with their bodies. It is just that the decision point is prior to conceiving an new life.

Oh My Goodness, I have to rethink my whole world now. Lindsay Lohan thinks “Barak Obama is the best choice, in this election, for president.” With the great minds of the world like Lindsay Lohan and Eva Longoria-Parker endorsing Senator Obama, I must be wrong.

Obama chooses Sen. Joe Biden to be running mate – CNN.com

This is just too good. If you ever really needed proof that Obama lacks experience, here it is. Of course people will have to be really careful when they talk about this ticket “Obama Biden” could easily become “Osama Bin Ladin”. As a conservative, I really can’t think of a better pick of a running mate than Biden. Biden has the kind of record that Obama would have if he actually had experience. Not to speak of the arrogance that both men display that most Americans find offensive. The Tax and Energy policies alone are enough to make it obvious that these two men should never occupy the White House.

Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, brings years of experience that could help counter GOP arguments that an Obama administration would be inexperienced on foreign policy.
