The results are in and I finished in 7th place out of 8 in the 40+ mens class. This was the longest race I had ever done, and my goal was 12 laps. I had assumed good weather and in the best conditions I could do approximately 45 minute laps. That would give me 15 to 20 minutes per lap to pit. I fell 1 lap short of my goal but that was more because of one of my lessons learned which I will talk about later.
First what I did right. I pretty much nailed keeping myself fed. I ate every lap between 240 and 270 calories and never had a stomach issue or felt weak from lack of food. I only drank water for 2 reasons. I wanted to avoid the additional calories on top of the food and sports drink tends to cause stomach issues for me. That system worked very well. I consumed a little over a gallon of water for the race. I ate a mix of fat free fig newtons and powerbars that worked very well. I alternated between the fig newtons and the powerbars every other lap except between laps 5 and 6 that I rode continuously. I also set the HR alarm on my Garmin Edge 305 to a maximum heart rate of 162 and every time it went off, I would slow down. The first lap when I was actually riding with people it was a little awkward but I think that was the biggest reason I was able to go as far as I did.
The lessons I learned. First I learned that shoes that are a little snug at the start of a race will hurt after 8 to 10 hours. Next I learned why products like this and this exist. Of course now I have to admit to using this. Sunday was a difficult day to sit down, but today has been much better.
All in all, I am very pleased with how I did, the next day soreness was minimal. I haven’t tried to get on the bike again since then. Tomorrow or Wednesday should be the first post race workout so we will see how much I really hurt. Last year it took me better than a week to recover from a 6 hour race. Today I feel much better after a 12 hour race than I did after a 6 hour race.
