My new favorite song is “While You Were Sleeping” as performed by Casting Crowns. This song talks about the big 3 christian events after creation from an interesting perspective. First, Bethlehem, where Jesus was born had no room for him, so he slept in a manger. The song says “For the King has left his throne and he’s sleeping in a manger tonight.” So “Bethlehem will go down in history as a city with no room for it’s King.” Next Jerusalem, the city where Jesus died had no room for him because they killed him. As the song says, “The way, the truth the life had come but there was no room for him in the world he came to save.” Jerusalem was another city with no room for it’s King. Finally the song talks about the USA “sung to sleep by philosiphies that save the trees and kill the children.” The song then asks the the question “Will Jesus come again and leave you slumbering where you lay?” Then the plea to America, “will you go down in history as a nation with no room for it’s King, will we be sleeping?” Just the power of the imagery of the things that happen while we sleep and how we could miss the biggest event to come because of our choices in the same way.
It is very hard not to leave that song on repeat play in my car. It is a great reminder with all of the imagery of Bethlehem this season of what can happen if we just sleep through life.
